Most iconic artists from India

To capture the full breadth of Indian art history to the visionaries who shaped nation’s cultural identity. Here are 10 of India's most iconic artists and their enduring impact:

  1. Raja Ravi Varma: The "Father of Modern Indian Art" who democratised art by making lithographs of Hindu deities accessible to every household, blending European realism with Indian mythology. He was the first to bridge the gap between European Academic Realism and Indian mythology. By winning the Governor's Gold Medal in 1873 and later awards at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago (1893), he introduced the world to a "humanised" India.
  2. Amrita Sher-Gil: Often called India’s Frida Kahlo, she revolutionized the 1930s by shifting the artistic focus to the somber, authentic realities of rural Indian women.
  3. M.F. Husain: A founding member of the Progressive Artists' Group, his modified Cubist style defined post-independence Indian modernism, making him a household name globally. Untitled (Gram Yatra) (1954): In March 2025, this 14-foot masterpiece sold for $13.8 million (₹118+ crore) at Christie’s New York, becoming the most expensive Indian artwork ever auctioned.

  4. S.H. Raza: He transformed Indian spirituality into geometric abstraction, using the Bindu (the dot) as a symbol of cosmic origin and meditative focus. The Story Teller (1937): Previously held the record, selling for ₹61.8 crore in late 2023.
  5. Abanindranath Tagore: Founder of the Bengal School of Art, he rejected Western materialism to revive indigenous styles and pan-Asian aesthetics during the nationalist movement.
  6. Jamini Roy: He rejected his Western training to return to his roots, popularizing the Kalighat folk style and proving that bold, simplistic folk art could be "High Art."

  7. Tyeb Mehta: A master of minimalist lines and fractured figures, his work (like the Mahishasura series) captured the existential angst of a post-colonial nation and set record prices at international auctions. His works were  pivotal figures in Indian modern art, renowned for his distinct stylistic approach characterized by bold brushstrokes and a deep exploration of themes related to suffering, conflict, and existentialism.
  8. Nandlal Bose: Were you aware that the pages of the original Indian Constitution are embellished with exquisite illustrations by Nandalal Bose - one of the key figures of Modern Indian Art and his students? A pupil of Tagore, he blended Ajanta murals, mughal miniatures and Indian folk art with modern sensibilities.
  9. Anjolie Ela Menon: One of India’s leading female contemporary artists, she introduced a unique mural-like quality and used non-traditional surfaces like masonite and glass to explore domesticity and the female form.
  10. Subodh Gupta: A contemporary icon, known for using stainless steel tiffins and utensils to create massive installations that reflect India’s economic transition and everyday life into powerful symbols of social, economic, and cultural life in contemporary India.
